Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a furnace tune-up?

Plus icon - black

If it has been a year or longer since you have had any maintenance performed, we recommend getting a furnace tune-up. Today’s high-efficiency condensing furnaces require yearly maintenance to stay in tip-top shape. A simple adjustment or two might mean the difference between a unit that lasts 20 years and one that gives up after 5.

How often should I have my furnace serviced?

Plus icon - black

You should have your furnace serviced once a year. A furnace tune-up will help keep your furnace running smoothly and extend its lifespan.

What are the benefits of annual furnace maintenance?

Plus icon - black

Regular maintenance can help make the most of your central heating system. There are many benefits to prioritizing your annual furnace tune-up, including:

  • Save energy and money: Furnace upkeep is essential to keeping your heating system functioning at peak efficiency. A well-maintained furnace can even translate to monthly savings on your energy bills. The money you save through regular maintenance may even pay for your annual furnace maintenance in the long run!
  • Maintain the warranty: Some furnace warranties include provisions requiring regular maintenance. If this is the case, frequent tune-ups are critical to keeping your warranty valid and obtaining the coverage you need if something goes wrong during the warranty period.
  • Minimize risk of needing repair: Minor concerns can be identified and addressed before they become more serious problems through routine furnace maintenance. This also means fewer system breakdowns, less heating repair work, and a reduced risk of being left without heat during the winter.
  • Maximize the life of your furnace: A well-maintained furnace will last for several years. This allows you to get the most use out of your investment.
  • Protect against carbon monoxide leaks: Furnaces that are not regularly maintained can produce carbon monoxide, which can be fatal. Keep your furnace tuned-up to protect your family from carbon monoxide leaks.

How long does a furnace tune-up take?

Plus icon - black

Many tune-ups can take about 1 hour, but some furnaces and projects require more time. We’ll go over the whole process with you when you book your furnace service.

What does the HVAC service tech need from me?

Plus icon - black

We just need you to make sure there's easy access to the furnace so our service techs can work safely and efficiently.

If possible, leave some space on your driveway for our van so our service techs can access all tools and devices they might need as some are directly built into the van.

Can I tune up my furnace on my own as a DIY?

Plus icon - black

Unlike a new furnace installation, you can tune-up your furnace on your own, as long as you know what to look for.

The most important part of the tune-up is a visual inspection of the water draining system. One small undetected leak can cut your furnace’s lifespan by years.

Because furnace tune-ups require knowledge of the whole system and an eye for detail, we recommend a pro for your annual furnace maintenance. The energy cost savings from a well-maintained furnace can bring this cost to nearly net-zero over time, so it’s worth leaving it to an expert.

What exactly is included in a furnace tune-up?

Plus icon - black

Your furnace tune-up should involve a multi-point inspection to keep it in optimal working order. Preventative maintenance for a home furnace tune-up includes:

  1. Check air flow
  2. Check for water leaks
  3. Check and adjust gas pressure
  4. Check inducer motor operation
  5. Inspect heat exchanger
  6. Check drain function
  7. Check temperature rise
  8. Verify operation sequence
  9. Check air switch operation
  10. Check electrical connections
  11. Lubricate moving parts if required
  12. Air filter replacement (additional charge for the filter itself)

My furnace stopped working! What should I do?

Plus icon - black

If your furnace suddenly stops working, the first thing to do is check your furnace filter. If it’s a little less than clean, you might be in need of a replacement. This is an easy DIY task that can be done in minutes if you have the right replacement filter and know how to install it.

If you’re not sure how to replace your own filter, Rümi can help! Book our service techs for an air filter installation for a perfect filter replacement.

If your filter is looking good, the next step is to check the power to the furnace. There is an on/off switch that powers your furnace, make sure it’s in the on position. This may seem simple, but you’d be surprised how often this issue comes up!

You can also check the furnace exhaust outside. Sometimes ice buildup in the exterior of your home can impede your furnace’s exhaust, which causes the furnace in turn to shut off. If this is the case, remove the ice from the furnace exhaust outlet and check your furnace again.

How can I keep track of my furnace maintenance?
