How to Make Your Hot Water Tank Last with Hard Calgary Water

5 tank tips to help fight mineral buildup.

Living in Calgary? Then you know that our water is hard. That means it has a lot of minerals like calcium and magnesium. While these are good for your health, they’re not so great for your hot water tank.

But don't worry! Here are some simple tips to help your hot water tank last longer.

Tank maintenance tips for hard water

1. Regularly flush your tank

Flushing your tank helps remove the build-up of minerals. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Turn off the power or gas to your tank.
  1. Attach a garden hose to the drain valve.
  1. Place the other end of the hose outside or in a drain.
  1. Open the valve and let the water flow out until it's clear.

Doing this every 6 months can make a big difference!

2. Use a water softener

A water softener can help reduce the minerals flowing through your tank. It uses salt to replace the calcium and magnesium. Installing one can protect your tank and all your plumbing.

What are the benefits of a water softener?

It's a great investment for your home, especially in areas like Calgary with hard water. Removing excess minerals like calcium and magnesium helps protect your plumbing, appliances, and tank from scale buildup. Look forward to fewer clogs, longer-lasting appliances, and more efficient water heating.

Plus, with softer water, you'll notice your soap and detergent work better, leaving your dishes, clothes, and even your skin feeling cleaner and softer.

3. Check the anode rod

The anode rod is a metal rod inside your tank that attracts minerals. Over time, it wears out and needs to be replaced. Here’s how to check it:

  • Turn off the power or gas and water supply.
  • Locate the anode rod on top of the tank.
  • Unscrew it and pull it out.

If it’s less than half an inch thick or coated in minerals, it’s time for a new one.

4. Lower the temperature

Set your water heater to 120°F. Higher temperatures cause more mineral buildup. Plus, it saves energy and prevents scalding.

5. Insulate your tank

Insulating your tank helps it run more efficiently. You can buy a tank insulation blanket from a hardware store. Wrap it around your tank, but don’t cover the top, bottom or thermostat.

6. Regular maintenance

Have a professional check your tank every year. They can spot problems early and extend the life of your tank.
